The Location
Madrid, the capital of Spain, is located in the very heart of the country. With a population of 4.5 million people, Madrid, Commonwealth University students can enjoy an endless array of cultural, artistic, sport, and leisure activities. From the priceless collections in the Prado Museum to the massive Royal Palace (the largest in the world) to the open-air terraces in the Plaza Mayor to the wide boulevards of its chief financial district, Madrid’s treasures embody the spirit of this city that truly never sleeps. Don’t be intimidated by its size, however. Madrid has an excellent mass transportation system; with subways that will take you from one end of the city to another in the time it takes you to drink a cup of coffee …or two. Madrileños, you see, are never in a hurry.

The University
Nebrija University is a small, private university founded in 1985. Its 10,000 students are located on two campuses, the Dehesa de la Villa campus, located in the university district of Madrid, and the La Berzosa campus, located 15 miles north of the city. Commonwealth University students take their classes at the Dehesa de la Villa campus. The Center for Spanish Studies of Nebrija University coordinates a special Spanish Studies Program, which includes Language Studies, Literature, Art, Drama, Spanish History, Politics, and Economics. The program receives a wide variety of international students from 26 different countries.

Academics
The Spanish Studies Program offers specific courses and optional courses so that each student has some flexibility in determining his or her own curriculum. Each semester, students must elect three specific courses. Two additional courses can be chosen from either the specific or optional course lists. All classes meet for three hours per week. Many courses are offered in Social Sciences, Communication and Arts, and Language and Education. Specific programs for international students are also offered: Hispanic Studies Program, and Spanish Plus Program. (Please note that course offerings can be different based on the semester)

One month prior to the official start of the semester, Nebrija offers an Intensive Spanish Language Course that meets for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. Note that this course is supplemental. It is not part of the Commonwealth University -Nebrija exchange agreement. The cost for this program is approximately 300 Euros. Commonwealth University students receive 3 semester hours of credit. A language proficiency test will be given to all students prior to the official start of the semester. Those students who test below intermediate level will be required to enroll in Spanish Language, Spanish Conversation & Composition, and Specific Problems in Grammar.

Housing
The University offers housing with families in Madrid. Students can choose between full board and half board. Students with full board will have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Those who have half board will have two meals: breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Meals not taken in the house should be taken out as families do not allow the use of the kitchen. Spanish breakfast is very light; the most important meal in Spain is lunch.

Students studying in Madrid MUST live in housing approved by Nebrija University and cannot arrange housing independently.
*To book your accommodation you must send the total amount corresponding to the first month of stay in advance. You will have to pay the rest of your stay in one payment or allow Nebrija University to charge the month housing fee the last Wednesday of each month. Upon receipt of the deposit, the University will send you the address of the family. The University only guarantees accommodation during the length of your program.
Air Travel
Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Please see the international office for information.

Tuition - Commonwealth University students continue to pay Commonwealth University tuition and fees while attending the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija. Keep in mind that all financial aid can apply toward your study in Spain since you are participating on a Commonwealth University sponsored program. Students do not pay any tuition or fees in Spain. Please note, however, that it will be necessary to pay for activities such as athletic club memberships, if you wish to utilize those services.

Academic Calendar
The fall Intensive Spanish course (3 credit hours) runs from early September to early October. The Spanish Studies Program begins in September and finishes just prior to the winter break (approx. December 20). The spring Intensive Spanish course (3 credit hours) begins in early January and ends in early February. The Spanish Studies Program begins in January and runs through June.

Health Insurance
All students are required to maintain health insurance policy that will provide coverage while abroad and for the entire duration of this period. Information on international health insurance providers can be obtained from the Center for Global Engagement. You may find that your present health insurance policy includes overseas coverage. It is important, however, that your carrier provide written verification of such coverage.

So, how do I get started?
Simply come by the Center for Global Engagement to pick up an application form. Remember! Applications are due March 1 for the fall term and October 1 for the spring term.
