The Location
South Korea is situated in East Asia, on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. Its neighbors include China to the west, Japan to the east, and bordering North Korea to the north. South Korea’s region is a predominantly mountainous terrain, covering an area of approximately 100,000 square km. With its population over 48 million, it is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Chungnam National University (CNU) is conveniently located at the center of South Korea’s Daejeon Metropolitan City, 150 km away from the capital city of Seoul. Daejeon is the transportation hub of South Korea which makes it easy to access Seoul as well as other major cities.

The University
Founded in May 1952, Chungnam National University is one of the most prestigious centers of higher education in the South Korean nation. CNU has been making giant leaps in recent years in each and every academic field in order to join the ranks of the 100 most outstanding universities in the world. CNU has a cutting-edge learning environment and a variety of service facilities available to its students, including a health clinic, gym, coffee shops, and much more. CNU is the 3rd largest campus in South Korea with its student body at 26,000 undergraduates, 5,500 graduates and a global campus of approximately 1,200 international students from 30 different countries.

Academics
Several courses at CNU will be available in English in the disciplines of social sciences, basic sciences, economics, business, humanities and many more. Several courses are offered related to the history and culture of Korea. These courses will enable students to have a finer understanding of the country of South Korea in particular as well as the region of East-Asia in general. Three credits are earned for most classes. Field trips may be included in lecture hours. For those students interested in learning the Korean language, Korean classes will be available for program participants. Students can opt to take either Intensive Korean classes or evening classes.

Housing
Housing for international students will be on-campus in a furnished double room with a shared bathroom, similar to the dormitories at Commonwealth University. Furnishings include bed, desk, chair, closet and refrigerator in each room. Meal options offered include 2 meals (breakfast & dinner) a day on weekdays and 3 meals on weekends.

Air Travel – Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements, but airline tickets should NOT be purchased until after the visa has been issued. Please see the international office for assistance. See travel assistance guidelines for details.

Tuition - Commonwealth University students continue to pay Commonwealth University tuition and fees while attending Central Chungnam National University.  Keep in mind that all financial aid can be applied toward your study in South Korea since you are participating in a Commonwealth University sponsored program. Students do not pay any tuition or fees in South Korea. Please note, however, that it will be necessary to pay for activities such as athletic club memberships, etc. if you wish to utilize those services.

Academic Calendar
The fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December. The spring term begins in early January and ends in mid-May.

Health Insurance
All students are required to maintain a health insurance policy that will provide coverage while abroad. Information on international health insurance providers can be obtained from the Center for Global Engagement. You may find that your present health insurance policy includes overseas coverage. It is important, however, that your carrier provide written verification of such coverage.

So, how do I get started?
Simply come by the Center for Global Engagement to pick up an application form. Remember! Applications are due March 1 for the fall term and October 1 for the spring term.
