The Location
Located in the heart of eastern Westphalia, Paderborn (population 130,000) is a city steeped in tradition yet with an eye to the future. Its history dates back 1,200 years. One can still marvel at the architectural beauty of the city’s cathedral, the Ottonian-Salic palace or St. Bartholemew’s chapel. Still, Paderborn’s role as an important commercial center, today, can be seen in its 20th century architecture, impressive highways, industrial estates, and polished residential areas. It is an ideal site for Commonwealth University students to consider for their study abroad experience.

The University
The University of Paderborn was founded in 1972 and today maintains a student population of 17,000. Approximately a third of these are students of business administration and economics. The library located within the university holds approximately one million volumes and subscriptions to 3,800 national and international periodicals. Links with more than 70 universities in Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia are critical aspects of the fabric of the university, and the University of Paderborn firmly believes that these international contacts add to the international flair of the university.

Academics
The academic program at Paderborn is geared toward both German language students and business, management, economics, and accounting students. The German language course (Sprachkurs) consists of four levels (Grundstufe 1, Grundstufe 2, Mittelstufe and Oberstufe). These courses are intensive, meeting over a three-month period of time, five days a week, for four hours per day. Students receive 12 semester hours of Commonwealth University credit in German. Students may also choose to enroll in a 3-credit bearing one-month intensive German language program free of charge prior to the start of the fall and spring terms, respectively. For business, management, economics, and accounting students, Paderborn offers a program --- IN ENGLISH --- that will allow them to meet certain core requirements and electives. Courses pre-approved for Commonwealth University credit (3 semester hours each) include*:

Housing
Students pay for their housing accommodations in Paderborn. The International Office (Akademische Auslandsamt) at Paderborn will assist you in securing housing and you will find that you will have a number of options including private rooms in a shared apartment (WG), a one-room apartment with a bathroom and limited cooking possibilities, a private room in a family’s home, or a separate room in a student dorm with shared kitchen and bathroom. Costs range between 300 to 400 Euros per month. Most students find that it is very advantageous to use Paderborn’s efficient transportation system to get to and from classes.

Air Travel – students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Please see the international office for assistance. See travel assistance guidelines for details.

Tuition - Commonwealth University students continue to pay Commonwealth University tuition and fees while attending the Paderborn University. Sprachkurs students are also required to pay approximately $200 to Paderborn for the fall and spring terms, respectively. Keep in mind that all financial aid can apply toward your study in Germany since you are participating on a Commonwealth University sponsored program. Students do not pay any tuition or fees in Germany. Please note, however, that it will be necessary to pay for activities such as athletic club memberships, if you wish to utilize those services.

Academic Calendar
Depending upon the program in which you deicide to enroll, the academic calendar will vary. For Sprachkurs students, the fall term runs from early October through late December (not including the optional September intensive program) and the spring term runs from early January through the end of March. The fall business program runs from early October through mid-December. The spring business program runs from early April through early July. Business program students have the option of enrolling in both the September and March non-credit bearing intensive German course free of charge.

Health Insurance
All students are required to maintain a health insurance policy that will provide coverage while abroad and for the entire duration of this period. U.S. insurance policies are not accepted in Germany; therefore, you need to take out additional German public insurance once you have arrived in Paderborn – there are two public insurance companies on campus, that students can choose to sign up with: the Techniker Krankenkasse (
http://www.tk.de/tk/english/610312 ) and the AOK (https://aok-on.de/studierende/foreign-students-information.html). Costs of public insurances in Germany typically amount to about 80 EUR per month
