Study Abroad in Jena, Germany!

Cost
  • Study in Jena costs no more than studying in Bloomsburg.
  • Students pay tuition and fees at Bloomsburg University, the same as if they were taking classes in Bloomsburg.
  • Financial aid and grants apply to study in Jena as they would at Bloomsburg.
  • SCHOLARSHIPS are available specifically for BU students who study abroad on exchange programs.
  • Students pay minor fees to cover health insurance, incidental program costs, and the student identification. This ID not only allows access to university facilities, such as the library, but is good for student discounts, and permits free travel on all public transportation!
  • Room and board varies. Housing generally is between $250 and $350 per month for a dorm room (all dorm rooms are single or single bedrooms in apartment-like suites). The rooms are very clean and accomodating. Although there is no meal plan as we know it, the university dining halls offer a wide variety of midday meals at a very low price. Otherwise, students generally prepare their own meals in the dormitory.
  • Travel to Jena includes air fare to Frankfurt am Main and then railway fare to Jena (about a three-hour train ride). Travel costs vary widely. In the past, students have taken advantage of off-season rates and have purchased plane tickets for as low as around $900. The train costs approximately $90 one way.
Credits
  • Students take 12 to 18 credit hours. German majors must transfer a minimum of 15 credits of German language courses.
  • Credits transfer as per advisement with the program director.
  • Courses in other subjects are available, some taught in English.
Curriculum
  • BU students study for one or two semesters in Jena. We strongly encourage students to study abroad for two semesters, especially if German will be part of future career plans (such as teaching) or if a student is planning to apply to graduate school.
  • The winter semester begins at the beginning of October and ends in February. The summer semester begins at the beginning of April and ends in July.
  • Our students enjoy a full week of orientation to adjust to the university, the city, and to help get settled in.
  • Students take courses in German language, literature, culture and history. These courses are adapted to their linguistic abilities.
  • The university offers optional low-cost excursions to other German cities as extra-curricular events.
  • Students take 12 to 18 credit hours. German majors must transfer a minimum of 17 credit hours.
  • Credits transfer as per advisement with the program director.
Eligibility
  • be enrolled at Bloomsburg University or at a University in the PA State System of Higher Education
  • be in good standing at the university
  • have completed two years of college German above the elementary level, or the equivalent, by the beginning of the program.
The City of Jena

The 1000-year-old city of Jena lies in the middle of Germany on the Saale river, in the Land of Thuringia. With a population of over 100,000, the city is best known as a university and intellectual center and home to the Zeiss optics works. Its many attractions include museums, well-preserved landmark buildings and monuments, and the botanical garden.
