Cost

Study in Trier costs no more than studying in Bloomsburg.

• Students pay tuition and fees at Bloomsburg University, the same as if they were taking classes in Bloomsburg.
• Financial aid and grants apply to study in Trier as they would at Bloomsburg.
• SCHOLARSHIPS are available specifically for BU students who study abroad on exchange programs.
• Students pay minor fees for ID, health insurance, and incidentals. The student ID not only allows access to university facilities, such as the library, but is good for student discounts, and permits free travel on all public transportation!
• Room and board varies. Students pay about $250-$350 per month for a dorm room (all dorm rooms are single rooms or single rooms in apartment-like suits). The rooms are very clean and accomodating. Although there is no meal plan as we know it, the university dining halls offer a wide variety of midday meals at a very low price. Otherwise, students generally prepare their own meals in the dormitory.
• Travel to Trier includes airfare to Frankfurt am Main and then railway fare to Trier (about a three-hour train ride). Travel costs vary widely. In the past, students have taken advantage of off-season rates and have purchased plane tickets for as low as $600 from New York, Newark, or Philadelphia. The train costs approximately $65 one way.
• Textbooks are very inexpensive.

Credits

• Students take 12 to 18 credit hours.
• Credits transfer as per advisement with the BU program director.

Curriculum

• BU students study for one or two semesters in Trier. Two semesters is highly recommended, especially for those who plan to use German in their future careers (such as teaching) or who plan to apply to graduate school.
• The winter semester begins at the beginning of October and Ends in February. The summer semester at UT begins at the beginning of April, and ends at the end of July. So there is a nice long break between semesters for extra travel.
• Our students enjoy a full week of orientation to adjust to the university, the city, and to help get settled in.
• Students take courses in German language, literature, culture and history. These courses are adapted to their linguistic abilities.
• Students take 12 to 18 credit hours. German majors must complete one semester and transfer a minimum of 17 credit hours.
• Credits transfer as per advisement with the program director.

Eligibility

• be enrolled at Bloomsburg University or at a University in the PA State System of Higher Education
• be in good standing at the university
• have completed two years of college German above the elementary level, or the equivalent, by the beginning of the program.

The City of Trier
Trier's history goes back well over 2000 years as an outpost of the Roman Empire. Still-standing ancient Roman structures, the St. Peter Cathedral, and the museums of archeology and history are some of Trier's most famous tourist attractions.
The University of Trier was founded in 1473, closed in 1796, and reopened in 1970.
Trier has a population of about 100,000 and is located in the Moselle river valley, with most of the city on the east bank of the Moselle river. The landscape around Trier is covered with forest and vineyards. Trier sits on the border with Luxembourg.
Located in the middle of Germany's wine-growing region, Trier also is home to companies in the food, textile, and precision engineering industries.
